Among the best social media management tools, Buffer ranks first with 96 out of 100, ahead of Pallyy. What separates them is entry price: $5/month per account billed annually on Essentials; no monthly-billed price published (scored against annual-billed prices).
A social media management tool does more than queue posts. It is the one place where a team publishes, answers replies, gets sign-off and reads results, which is why this ranking weighs verified features and platform coverage next to price. The list below is computed, so a tool that changes its pricing page moves up or down without anyone editing this text.
How we picked
Management software is bought on a monthly price that hides a unit. One tool charges per connected account, another charges a flat amount for a workspace, and a third charges per seat, so the same team can pay very different bills for the same setup. The scorecard puts every tool through the same criteria and counts the cost per connected account, so a low sticker price does not hide a meter that moves fast. Read how we score for the formulas and what happens when a value is missing.
Every one of the 60 social media management tools we looked at is scored by the same 7 criteria (scorecard version 2), each from the vendor's own pricing page, docs or changelog. 49 had enough verified data to be ranked. A criterion without verified data is left out and the remaining weights are re-normalised; under 60% of the weight covered means the tool is not ranked.
| Criterion | Weight | Type | What we measure and how |
|---|---|---|---|
| Entry price | 25% | Core | Price per month of the cheapest paid plan, against the prices of other social media management tools on the same billing basis (monthly-billed prices against monthly, annual-billed against annual).Formula: Log scale. Billed monthly: $9/month or less = 100, $599 or more = 0. Only billed annually: $6/month or less = 100, $79 or more = 0. Only free plans = 100. Usage-priced and one-time plans are not scored. |
| Free plan or trial | 15% | Core | Whether you can use the tool before paying: a free plan, or failing that a free trial, as shown on the vendor's pricing page.Formula: Free plan = 100. No free plan but a free trial = 60. The pricing page lists plans but shows neither = 0. No plans read = not scored. |
| Pricing transparency | 10% | Core | How much of the pricing is public: the share of plans with a published price ("contact sales" counts against), and whether there are at least 3 published tiers.Formula: 80 x (plans with a public price / plans listed) + 20 x (public plans, up to 3) / 3. No plans read = not scored. |
| Verified features | 15% | Core | How many of the 21 features we track for this category the vendor's own pages verifiably show (posting queue, bulk scheduling (csv or multi-post), calendar view, first-comment scheduling, direct auto-publishing, recurring posts, media library, ai caption assistant, post and account analytics, report exports (pdf/csv), best-time-to-post suggestions, approval workflows, user roles and permissions, separate client workspaces, unified social inbox, white-label reports, link tracking (utm / short links), content repurposing, ugc collection, social listening, competitor analytics). This counts verified features only: a tool that documents less scores lower here, and only here.Formula: Linear: verified features / 11 (half the tracked list) x 100, capped at 100. No tracked feature verified = not scored. |
| API, integrations and export | 10% | Core | Whether a public API exists, how many integrations the vendor states, and whether the vendor documents a way to export your data.Formula: Average of the parts with data: public API yes = 100, no = 0; integrations on a log scale (100 or more = 100); a documented data export = 100. None verified = not scored. |
| Platform coverage | 10% | Category | How many of the 15 social platforms we track the vendor says the tool supports.Formula: Linear: platforms / 10 x 100, capped at 100. No verified platform list = not scored. |
| Cost per connected account | 15% | Category | Monthly price per connected account on the cheapest paid plan that allows at least 5 social accounts and 2 users.Formula: Log scale: $3 per account or less = 100, $60 or more = 0. Plans that do not state an account limit are not used. |
The ranking
The table shows the first tools by score, with the date each tool's pricing page was last read. A tool with too little verified data is left out of the order instead of being guessed, which is why coverage appears next to every score. For the whole category, including tools that are narrower in scope, open the social media management category.

Each value links the vendor page it was read from (hover for the check date). Coverage is the share of the scorecard's weight with verified data, and "N of M criteria" how many criteria the score is based on; a tool is ranked at 60% or more.
Score is 0 to 100 on the category scorecard; coverage is the share of scorecard weight with verified data. Prices are list prices in US dollars from each vendor's pricing page; the Checked column is the newest date any fact of that tool was verified. 11 listed without a score because under 60% of the weight has verified data. How the score works: methodology.
What a management tool adds on top of scheduling
Scheduling answers one question: when does this post go out. Management adds three more. Who has to approve it, where do the replies land, and which posts worked. If you only need the first, the full social media scheduling ranking will serve you better, and it will usually be cheaper.
Teams of one rarely need an approval step. Teams of two or more usually do, and so do agencies that answer to a client. Look at the user limit on the plan you would actually buy, because many tools allow more accounts long before they allow more people.

Buffer takes first place on entry price, free access, pricing transparency and an open API. Its paid plans are priced per connected account, so the bill is easy to predict and grows with every profile you add.
Read the rank with one caveat: the catalogue holds no verified platform list or cost-per-account figure for Buffer, so those two criteria are left out of its total instead of being guessed. Check Buffer's own channel list before you commit. Its multi-user plan sits one tier above the entry plan.
- Free plan: 3 social accounts, 1 user.
- Entry paid plan: Essentials at $5 per connected account per month.
- Team plan: $10 per connected account per month, with unlimited users.
- Approvals: Yes. Social inbox: Yes.

Pallyy lists its prices per plan and per month, with workspaces and users as the limits, instead of charging per connected account. That suits a freelancer or small agency running several brands, because client workspaces and report exports are both marked as available and it covers a wide set of networks. The trade-off is that the entry paid plan allows only one workspace and one user, so extra brands push you to a plan that costs a good deal more.
- Free plan: 1 workspace, 1 user, 15 scheduled posts per month.
- Paid entry: Pro at $25 per month, with 1 workspace and 1 user.
- Agency plan: $99 per month, with 10 workspaces and 3 users.
- Client workspaces: Yes. Social inbox: Yes.
- Export: Per-client reports as PDFs.

Posterly covers most of the tracked networks and lists approvals, an inbox, client workspaces and roles, so it reads as a full management tool at $6 per month, billed annually on the entry plan. It sells by the year, which keeps the monthly equivalent low but gives you no month-to-month option to try it first. The free access score is lower than its neighbours because it offers a trial and no free plan.
- Platforms: Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, X (Twitter), LinkedIn, YouTube, Pinterest, Threads, Bluesky, Google Business Profile, Telegram, Mastodon.
- Entry plan: Starter at $67 per year, which works out to $6 per month, billed annually.
- Accounts on the entry plan: 5.

TrackMedia is built by the team behind this site, and it goes through the same scorecard as every other tool here. It pairs a free plan with a low-priced Creator plan and a long list of networks that includes Reddit. Its feature list is shorter than the leaders: approvals and a social inbox are not among its verified features, and the entry paid plan is for one user, so shared work arrives on the higher tiers.
- Free plan: 15 scheduled posts per month, 1 user, 1 workspace, 1 storage gb.
- Entry paid plan: Creator at $8.25 per month, with 1 user.
- Agency plan: $66.58 per month, with 1 user and 20 workspaces.
- Platforms: Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, X (Twitter), LinkedIn, YouTube, Pinterest, Threads, Bluesky, Google Business Profile, Reddit, Telegram, Mastodon.
- Trial: No free trial.

Metricool is the analytics-leaning option in this group. It lists competitor analytics, report exports and a social inbox, and its Starter plan allows several workspaces on a flat monthly price. Its pricing transparency score is lower than the others because one plan is sold through sales. The free plan is a taster rather than a working tier, because it caps scheduled posts per month.
- Free plan: 1 workspace, 20 scheduled posts per month.
- Entry paid plan: Starter at $25 per month, or $20 per month, billed annually.
- Workspaces on Starter: 10.
- Competitor analytics: Yes. Report exports: Yes.
- Trial: No free trial.

Zoho Social has the longest verified platform list in this post and lists both social listening and a social inbox. Its free plan allows more accounts than most, but only one user, and the entry paid plan stays at one user as well. A team that needs several logins has to move to the Premium plan, which narrows the price advantage. No API fact is verified for it, so that criterion is left out of its total.
- Free plan: 1 workspace, 6 social accounts, 1 user.
- Entry paid plan: Standard at $10 per month, with 1 user.
- Premium plan: $40 per month, with 3 users.
- Social listening: Yes. Social inbox: Yes.
- Platforms: 14 networks in the verified list.
Which type of tool fits which team
Match the pricing unit to your setup before you compare scores. A solo creator with a few profiles does well on a per-account tool such as Buffer, because the bill stays small. A freelancer managing many small brands often does better on a workspace-based tool such as Pallyy or Metricool. A team that needs a shared inbox and listening should start from Zoho Social.
For agencies the question shifts to workspaces, users and white-label reporting, which the guide to managing multiple social media accounts covers in detail. For budgets, the list of free social media schedulers lists the free plans and what they cap.
Who should not pick it
- Solo creators who only need a queue should not pay for inbox and approvals: Buffer lists a free plan with 3 social accounts, 1 user.
- Teams that need several logins on the cheapest paid plan should skip TrackMedia Creator and Zoho Social Standard: both list 1 user on that plan.
- Anyone who wants to pay month to month should skip Posterly, whose entry plan is listed as $67 per year.
- Anyone who expects a generous free plan should not pick Metricool: its free plan is 1 workspace, 20 scheduled posts per month.
- Agencies that need more than one client workspace on the cheapest paid plan should not pick Pallyy Pro, which lists 1 workspace.
What we did not test
We did not use any of these tools. Everything above comes from the vendors' public pricing and feature pages, scored by code, so it says what a vendor publishes and what it costs. It cannot tell you how reliably a post goes out, how fast the app loads, how good the support is or whether the inbox handles busy accounts. Read the vendor's own page before you pay, and use the free plan or trial first where one exists. For the full list of what we leave out, see what we did not test.
– = not published by the vendor, or not verified yet.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a social media management tool and a scheduler?
A scheduler publishes posts at set times. A management tool adds work around the post, such as a shared inbox, approvals and reports. Zoho Social lists a social inbox as Yes and approvals as Yes, which is the kind of extra a plain scheduler may leave out.
Is there a free social media management tool?
Yes. Buffer lists a free plan with 3 social accounts, 1 user, and TrackMedia lists one with 15 scheduled posts per month, 1 user, 1 workspace, 1 storage gb. Both were read from the vendors' pricing pages on Oct 14, 2026.
How do I compare prices when tools charge different units?
Convert everything to the same unit before you compare. Buffer charges $5 per connected account per month, while Pallyy charges $25 per month regardless of how many networks you connect, so the cheaper tool depends on how many accounts you run.
Which of the social media management tools ranks first on SaaSHunter?
Buffer has the highest score, 96 out of 100, among the 49 social media management tools with enough verified data to be ranked. Its facts were last checked Oct 14, 2026. Scores are computed from the published scorecard and change when the underlying facts change.
Which social media management tools have a free plan?
17 of the 49 ranked social media management tools list a free plan: Buffer, Pallyy, Publer, Metricool, TrackMedia, Zoho Social, Antwork, Planable, social-media-skills, Iconosquare, Typefully, Social Champ, CoSchedule, Post Planner, Reachlee, cadencz, brightbean-studio. What the free plan allows differs, so check the limits column before choosing.
What is the lowest starting price among social media management tools?
Among the ranked social media management tools, Buffer has the lowest paid starting price at $5 per connected account per month. Tools charge per seat, per connected account or per workspace, so the units differ and the lowest sticker price is not always the lowest bill for your setup.
How are the social media management tools scored?
Each tool is scored from 0 to 100 on 7 weighted criteria taken from the same scorecard for every tool: entry price, free plan or trial, pricing transparency, verified features, api, integrations and export, platform coverage, cost per connected account. Criteria without verified data are left out and the weights re-normalised; a tool with under 60% of the weight covered is listed as not ranked.
