Schedule Instagram Posts: Tools Compared on Free Limits and Price

How to schedule Instagram posts with a tool, and which Instagram schedulers fit best, compared on free-plan post limits, auto-publishing, price and platforms.

By Updated Data checked through 5 min read

To schedule Instagram posts with a tool, connect your Instagram account, upload the media, write the caption and pick a date and time. Zoho Social ranks first among Instagram schedulers with 96 out of 100, ahead of Posterly.

The criterion that separates the top two is free plan or trial: Free plan (Free). Free plans on Instagram schedulers cap different things, so the section on free limits is where most readers will save money.

How to schedule Instagram posts

The flow is similar in every tool.

  1. Connect the Instagram account in the tool. Each vendor documents which account types it can publish to, so read its help page before you start.
  2. Upload your image or video and write the caption. Many tools also store the media in a library for reuse.
  3. Add hashtags in the caption or, where the tool supports it, in a first comment.
  4. Choose a time or add the post to a queue.
  5. Check whether the tool publishes by itself or only sends you a reminder. That difference is the biggest practical one for Instagram, and it is listed in the bullets below as direct auto-publishing.

Our catalogue records whether a tool supports Instagram. It does not record which formats a tool can schedule, so for Reels, Stories or carousels check the vendor's page. For scheduling across other networks too, see the full social media scheduling ranking, or the Facebook scheduling guide if you cross-post.

How we picked

An Instagram scheduler is judged on whether it supports Instagram, what a normal setup costs and what the free plan actually allows. The scorecard uses the same criteria for every tool, including a free-tier criterion for the post and account limits on the free plan, and it only counts tools whose verified platform list includes Instagram. Read how we score for the formulas.

Every one of the 135 social media scheduling tools we looked at is scored by the same 8 criteria (scorecard version 2), each from the vendor's own pricing page, docs or changelog. 117 had enough verified data to be ranked. A criterion without verified data is left out and the remaining weights are re-normalised; under 60% of the weight covered means the tool is not ranked.

Scorecard criteria, weights and what each measures
CriterionWeightTypeWhat we measure and how
Entry price25%CorePrice per month of the cheapest paid plan, against the prices of other social media scheduling tools on the same billing basis (monthly-billed prices against monthly, annual-billed against annual).Formula: Log scale. Billed monthly: $9/month or less = 100, $49 or more = 0. Only billed annually: $9/month or less = 100, $58 or more = 0. Only free plans = 100. Usage-priced and one-time plans are not scored.
Free plan or trial15%CoreWhether you can use the tool before paying: a free plan, or failing that a free trial, as shown on the vendor's pricing page.Formula: Free plan = 100. No free plan but a free trial = 60. The pricing page lists plans but shows neither = 0. No plans read = not scored.
Pricing transparency10%CoreHow much of the pricing is public: the share of plans with a published price ("contact sales" counts against), and whether there are at least 3 published tiers.Formula: 80 x (plans with a public price / plans listed) + 20 x (public plans, up to 3) / 3. No plans read = not scored.
Verified features15%CoreHow many of the 19 features we track for this category the vendor's own pages verifiably show (posting queue, bulk scheduling (csv or multi-post), calendar view, first-comment scheduling, direct auto-publishing, recurring posts, media library, ai caption assistant, post and account analytics, report exports (pdf/csv), best-time-to-post suggestions, approval workflows, user roles and permissions, separate client workspaces, unified social inbox, white-label reports, link tracking (utm / short links), content repurposing, ugc collection). This counts verified features only: a tool that documents less scores lower here, and only here.Formula: Linear: verified features / 10 (half the tracked list) x 100, capped at 100. No tracked feature verified = not scored.
API, integrations and export10%CoreWhether a public API exists, how many integrations the vendor states, and whether the vendor documents a way to export your data.Formula: Average of the parts with data: public API yes = 100, no = 0; integrations on a log scale (100 or more = 100); a documented data export = 100. None verified = not scored.
Platform coverage10%CategoryHow many of the 15 social platforms we track the vendor says the tool supports.Formula: Linear: platforms / 10 x 100, capped at 100. No verified platform list = not scored.
Cost per connected account10%CategoryMonthly price per connected account on the cheapest paid plan that allows at least 3 social accounts.Formula: Log scale: $2 per account or less = 100, $40 or more = 0. Plans that do not state an account limit are not used.
Free plan limits5%CategoryWhat the free plan allows: connected accounts (full marks at 3), scheduled posts per month (full marks at 100).Formula: Each stated limit linear up to its full mark (unlimited = 100), averaged. Tools without a free plan, or whose free plan states none of these limits, are not scored here.

Each value links the vendor page it was read from (hover for the check date). Coverage is the share of the scorecard's weight with verified data, and "N of M criteria" how many criteria the score is based on; a tool is ranked at 60% or more.

Score is 0 to 100 on the category scorecard; coverage is the share of scorecard weight with verified data. Prices are list prices in US dollars from each vendor's pricing page; the Checked column is the newest date any fact of that tool was verified. 13 listed without a score because under 60% of the weight has verified data. How the score works: methodology.

Free plans: what the post limit really means

The headline "free plan" hides three different caps. A cap per month resets, so it limits how often you can post. A cap on total scheduled posts is closer to a trial, because once it is used you must pay. A cap on connected accounts limits how many profiles you can run, not how much you can post.

For a small account posting a few times a week, a monthly cap is workable. A total cap is a trial in practice.

Zoho Social leads the Instagram ranking because it pairs a free plan and a low entry price with direct auto-publishing, first-comment scheduling and a long platform list. The free plan allows more accounts than most, but one user only, so it fits a solo account holder and not a shared team.

TrackMedia is built by the team behind this site and is scored on the same scorecard. It lists a queue, a calendar, first-comment scheduling and direct auto-publishing, and its free plan caps scheduled posts per month (15 scheduled posts per month, 1 user, 1 workspace, 1 storage gb). It does not list a media library among its verified features, which matters if you reuse the same assets often.

Planoly leans toward visual planning. Its feature list includes templates, a media library, AI captions and a commerce feature, which suits a shop or a brand that plans a visual feed. Its plans step up by user count, so a team pays more as it grows, and the catalogue holds no verified API fact or free-plan limits for it.

Fedica allows many connected accounts on its free plan (12 social accounts, 10 scheduled posts total), but caps the total of scheduled posts instead of giving a monthly allowance, so the free tier is a short test. Paid plans lift the scheduled post cap, and report exports are listed as a feature. Its analytics export is documented, which is useful if you later move your data.

Pallyy suits someone who plans to grow into client work. It lists a media library, first-comment scheduling and direct auto-publishing, and its paid plans cover workspaces and users for agencies. The entry plan is $25 per month, which is more than the other paid plans here, and the free plan is limited by a monthly post allowance.

Who should not pick it

What we did not test

We did not use any of these tools. The data comes from the vendors' public pricing and feature pages, and the scores come from code. It cannot tell you whether a post reaches Instagram on time, whether Reels, Stories and carousels publish as intended, how a tool handles an expired connection to your account or how good its support is. Check the vendor's help pages for the post format you use and start on a free plan or trial. For the full list of what we leave out, see what we did not test.

Frequently asked questions

Can I schedule Instagram posts for free?

Yes, with limits. TrackMedia lists a free plan with 15 scheduled posts per month, 1 user, 1 workspace, 1 storage gb, Pallyy lists 1 workspace, 1 user, 15 scheduled posts per month, and Fedica lists 12 social accounts, 10 scheduled posts total. Note that the caps are measured differently, so compare the unit before the number.

What does auto-publish mean for Instagram?

Auto-publish means the tool posts to Instagram for you at the scheduled time, instead of sending a reminder for you to post by hand. Zoho Social lists direct auto-publishing as Yes and Planoly lists it as Yes.

Can I schedule Reels and Stories with these tools?

Our catalogue records whether a tool supports Instagram, not which formats it can schedule, so we do not claim Reels or Stories support for any tool. Check the vendor's help pages for the format you need before you commit.

How much does an Instagram scheduler cost to start?

On entry price, TrackMedia starts at $8.25 per month and Posthive at $9 per month, while Pallyy starts at $25 per month. A free plan beats all of them if its limits fit.

Which of the social media scheduling tools for Instagram ranks first on SaaSHunter?

Zoho Social has the highest score, 96 out of 100, among the 73 social media scheduling tools for Instagram with enough verified data to be ranked. Its facts were last checked Oct 14, 2026. Scores are computed from the published scorecard and change when the underlying facts change.

Which social media scheduling tools for Instagram have a free plan?

29 of the 73 ranked social media scheduling tools for Instagram list a free plan: Zoho Social, Iconosquare, Publer, TrackMedia, Multi Upload Tool, Supaslides, Fedica, Planoly, Pallyy, Metricool, ReelPilot, Donivo, Wahlu, Planable, Sally, Post Planner, ReelDrop, Social Champ, PostNitro, StreamLadder, Quso.ai, Viraloop, PostPeer, BulletSocial, CoSchedule, Choppity, Viibeo, Spikes Studio, brightbean-studio. What the free plan allows differs, so check the limits column before choosing.

What is the lowest starting price among social media scheduling tools for Instagram?

Among the ranked social media scheduling tools for Instagram, Delulu Social has the lowest paid starting price at $4.99 per month. Tools charge per seat, per connected account or per workspace, so the units differ and the lowest sticker price is not always the lowest bill for your setup.

How are the social media scheduling tools for Instagram scored?

Each tool is scored from 0 to 100 on 8 weighted criteria taken from the same scorecard for every tool: entry price, free plan or trial, pricing transparency, verified features, api, integrations and export, platform coverage, cost per connected account, free plan limits. Criteria without verified data are left out and the weights re-normalised; a tool with under 60% of the weight covered is listed as not ranked.
