An AI photo generator free plan is only as useful as its stated limit, and most plans state less than you would like. Z-Image lists 10 images per month and Kairval lists 50 credits per month, while Pixlr leads the free-plan ranking with 100 out of 100.
What a free plan can and cannot tell you
A free plan answers one question: can you try the tool before you pay. It rarely answers the next ones, which are how many pictures you can make, whether they carry a watermark and whether you can use them for work. A vendor page often leaves those to the fine print.
This guide sorts free plans into those that state a limit and those that do not. The first group lets you plan around a number. The second is closer to a trial, and you should treat it that way until you have generated something with it.
How we picked
All tools are scored on the same AI image scorecard, so a free plan is one input among several: price of the first paid plan, how openly plans are published, features and openness. The free plan criterion gives full credit for any free plan, which means the ranking cannot separate a generous free plan from a stingy one. That is why this post reads the limits by hand and ties each one to a verified value. The methodology explains the scoring in full.
Every one of the 91 AI image generators we looked at is scored by the same 7 criteria (scorecard version 1), each from the vendor's own pricing page, docs or changelog. 62 had enough verified data to be ranked. A criterion without verified data is left out and the remaining weights are re-normalised; under 60% of the weight covered means the tool is not ranked.
| Criterion | Weight | Type | What we measure and how |
|---|---|---|---|
| Entry price | 25% | Core | Price per month of the cheapest paid plan, against the prices of other AI image generators on the same billing basis (monthly-billed prices against monthly, annual-billed against annual).Formula: Log scale. Billed monthly: $6.99/month or less = 100, $29 or more = 0. Only billed annually: $5/month or less = 100, $20.83 or more = 0. Only free plans = 100. Usage-priced and one-time plans are not scored. |
| Free plan or trial | 15% | Core | Whether you can use the tool before paying: a free plan, or failing that a free trial, as shown on the vendor's pricing page.Formula: Free plan = 100. No free plan but a free trial = 60. The pricing page lists plans but shows neither = 0. No plans read = not scored. |
| Pricing transparency | 10% | Core | How much of the pricing is public: the share of plans with a published price ("contact sales" counts against), and whether there are at least 3 published tiers.Formula: 80 x (plans with a public price / plans listed) + 20 x (public plans, up to 3) / 3. No plans read = not scored. |
| Verified features | 15% | Core | How many of the 10 features we track for this category the vendor's own pages verifiably show (analytics, team access, templates, ai assistant, text to image, image to image / reference images, upscaling, inpainting or object editing, commercial use on paid plans, private generations). This counts verified features only: a tool that documents less scores lower here, and only here.Formula: Linear: verified features / 5 (half the tracked list) x 100, capped at 100. No tracked feature verified = not scored. |
| API, integrations and export | 10% | Core | Whether a public API exists, how many integrations the vendor states, and whether the vendor documents a way to export your data.Formula: Average of the parts with data: public API yes = 100, no = 0; integrations on a log scale (100 or more = 100); a documented data export = 100. None verified = not scored. |
| Cost per 100 images | 15% | Category | Price per 100 images on the cheapest paid plan that states a monthly allowance limit (monthly price / allowance).Formula: Log scale: $1 per 100 images or less = 100, $20 or more = 0. Unlimited or unstated allowances = not scored. |
| Cost per user (team of 3) | 10% | Category | Monthly price per user for a team of 3, on the cheapest paid plan that is priced per seat or states room for at least 3 users.Formula: Log scale: $4 per user or less = 100, $79 or more = 0. Plans that do not state a user limit are not used. No such plan = not scored. |
The ranking
The table lists only AI image tools that show a free plan on their pricing page, in rank order. Use the free plan column to see which ones have one, and the monthly price column to see what you pay when you outgrow it. A tool with no price in that column is one where the catalogue holds no paid plan.

Each value links the vendor page it was read from (hover for the check date). Coverage is the share of the scorecard's weight with verified data, and "N of M criteria" how many criteria the score is based on; a tool is ranked at 60% or more.
Score is 0 to 100 on the category scorecard; coverage is the share of scorecard weight with verified data. Prices are list prices in US dollars from each vendor's pricing page; the Checked column is the newest date any fact of that tool was verified. 13 listed without a score because under 60% of the weight has verified data. How the score works: methodology.
For a longer list, see the free AI image tools page. If you want to compare paid prices after the free plan runs out, the sister guide on text to image AI tools goes through entry prices and credit pools.

Z-Image gives the clearest free plan in the group because it counts images, not credits: 10 images per month. That is a trial-sized allowance, enough to judge whether the output suits you but not enough to run a content calendar on.
The step up is easy to price. The Starter plan is $9.90 per month for 600 images per month, and Pro is $29 per month for 3000 images per month.

Kairval states its free allowance as 50 credits per month, which is a credit count rather than an image count. What a credit buys depends on the model, so use the free credits to find out how many usable pictures you get before you read the paid ladder.
The first paid plan is a higher entry price than the $3.19 per month of Geneso.ai. Starter costs $19.90 per month for 1500 credits per month, so Kairval is a fit if you need the features, not if you only want a cheap place to generate photos.
See the Kairval profile for the other paid plans.

Nanoart lists a free plan of 10 credits per month, which is a trial-sized allowance and little more. Its only monthly paid plan, Pro (Monthly), is $19.90 per month with 1000 credits per month, and a yearly option is listed at $199 per year.
The catalogue records watermark removal as a paid-plan feature for this tool. That does not tell you what the free plan does, so check one free output before you plan around it.

Krea lists a free plan (Yes) but the catalogue holds no numeric limit for it, so you cannot plan a month of work around it. What it does show is a large paid pool one step up: Basic is $9 per month with 5000 credits per month. That makes it a reasonable place to start free, learn the models and then decide.
- Commercial use on paid plans: Yes.
- Text to image: Yes; upscaling: Yes.
- Annual price of the first paid plan: $5 per month, billed annually.

Pixlr is a browser photo editor first, with generation built in, so a free plan (Yes) is most useful when you already edit photos and want to add a generated element or two. The catalogue holds no numeric free limit for it. The first paid plan, Plus, is $2.49 per month with 80 credits per month, a low entry price paired with a small credit pool.

Clipdrop is the tool to pick if your free use is mostly edits rather than generation. Its single listed plan is Free, and it bundles background removal, object removal, upscaling and inpainting with text to image. The catalogue gives no numeric free limit and no paid price for it, so it is hard to know what happens when you outgrow it.

Geneso.ai lists a free plan (Yes) without a numeric limit in the catalogue, and its first paid plan is low-priced. Starter is $3.19 per month for 4500 credits per month. If your plan is to start free and move to a small paid plan once the output works for you, that low first step is the reason to look at it.
- Commercial use on paid plans: Yes.
- Text to image: Yes; templates: Yes.
- Also lists text to video: Yes.
The Geneso.ai profile shows its usage-based packs.
Who should not pick it
A free plan is the wrong basis for a decision when one of these applies:
- If you need to publish images commercially from a free plan, do not rely on any of these: the catalogue records commercial use only for paid plans, such as Yes for Krea.
- If you need a monthly image count you can plan around, skip Geneso.ai and Krea: the catalogue shows no free limit for them, only Yes for the free plan itself.
- If you want to make a lot of images for little money, skip Kairval: its first paid plan is $19.90 per month.
- If you only need a handful of edits, a trial-sized plan such as Nanoart with 10 credits per month will run out fast.
For video rather than photos, read the guide to AI video generators for social media instead.
What we did not test
We did not use any of these tools. Everything above is read from vendor pages and scored by code, so it tells you what a vendor publishes, not what a free plan feels like in use. We cannot say whether free images carry a watermark, how large the free outputs are, how long a free generation waits in a queue or whether a free plan stays available. Those are the facts that matter most to a free user, so generate one image on each plan you consider. For the full list of what we leave out, see what we do not test.
– = not published by the vendor, or not verified yet.
Frequently asked questions
Is there an AI photo generator that is really free?
Several list a free plan, but the limits differ. Z-Image lists 10 images per month, Kairval lists 50 credits per month and Nanoart lists 10 credits per month. A free plan with a stated limit is easier to judge than one that states none.
How many images do I get on a free plan?
Only Z-Image states its free allowance in images: 10 images per month. The others state credits, and a credit does not equal an image across tools. Kairval lists 50 credits per month, so run a few prompts and see how many it uses.
Do free AI photo generators put a watermark on images?
