Media Monitoring Tools Compared on Price and Coverage

Media monitoring tools scored on one scorecard: entry price, platforms listed, export, API and free plans, and the price gap between light and heavy tools.

By Updated Data checked through 5 min read

Of the media monitoring tools in our catalogue, Fedica ranks first with 98 out of 100, level with TrendFynd at 98. The criterion that decides the order is entry price: $15/month billed monthly on Publish; $10/month billed annually on Publish (scored on the monthly price).

What media monitoring tools actually cover

The label covers three different kinds of product, and the price gap between them is large. One group tracks brand and keyword mentions across social networks, news, blogs and forums, with alerts, sentiment and reports. A second group is a social media suite where listening is one module, usually on a higher plan. A third group is newer: services that check what AI assistants say about a brand.

Which group you need depends on the question you are asking. A PR team asks who wrote about the brand and where. A social team asks what people are saying and whether it is positive. A founder on a small budget mostly needs an alert when the brand name appears on a few networks. The table below mixes all three, so read the vendor descriptions in the tool notes before reading a score.

One caution about the scores. The scorecard measures price, limits, export, API and the number of social platforms a vendor lists. It does not measure how many news sources a tool indexes or how accurate its sentiment is, and the catalogue cannot verify either. A cheap tool can outrank a deep one, and the entry price of Brand24 ($249 per month) shows why the dedicated monitoring tools sit lower in the order.

How we picked

Monitoring is a recurring cost, so the criteria weight what you pay per user for a small team and how many networks a vendor says it covers, on top of the criteria every category shares: limits, getting your data out, lock-in and API. See how we score for the formulas and for what happens when a value is missing.

Every one of the 19 social listening tools we looked at is scored by the same 7 criteria (scorecard version 1), each from the vendor's own pricing page, docs or changelog. 13 had enough verified data to be ranked. A criterion without verified data is left out and the remaining weights are re-normalised; under 60% of the weight covered means the tool is not ranked.

Scorecard criteria, weights and what each measures
CriterionWeightTypeWhat we measure and how
Entry price25%CorePrice per month of the cheapest paid plan, against the prices of other social listening tools on the same billing basis (monthly-billed prices against monthly, annual-billed against annual).Formula: Log scale. Billed monthly: $15/month or less = 100, $249 or more = 0. Only billed annually: $5/month or less = 100, $59 or more = 0. Only free plans = 100. Usage-priced and one-time plans are not scored.
Free plan or trial15%CoreWhether you can use the tool before paying: a free plan, or failing that a free trial, as shown on the vendor's pricing page.Formula: Free plan = 100. No free plan but a free trial = 60. The pricing page lists plans but shows neither = 0. No plans read = not scored.
Pricing transparency10%CoreHow much of the pricing is public: the share of plans with a published price ("contact sales" counts against), and whether there are at least 3 published tiers.Formula: 80 x (plans with a public price / plans listed) + 20 x (public plans, up to 3) / 3. No plans read = not scored.
Verified features15%CoreHow many of the 4 features we track for this category the vendor's own pages verifiably show (analytics, team access, templates, ai assistant). This counts verified features only: a tool that documents less scores lower here, and only here.Formula: Linear: verified features / 2 (half the tracked list) x 100, capped at 100. No tracked feature verified = not scored.
API, integrations and export10%CoreWhether a public API exists, how many integrations the vendor states, and whether the vendor documents a way to export your data.Formula: Average of the parts with data: public API yes = 100, no = 0; integrations on a log scale (100 or more = 100); a documented data export = 100. None verified = not scored.
Cost per user (team of 3)15%CategoryMonthly price per user for a team of 3, on the cheapest paid plan that is priced per seat or states room for at least 3 users.Formula: Log scale: $16.33 per user or less = 100, $116 or more = 0. Plans that do not state a user limit are not used. No such plan = not scored.
Platform coverage10%CategoryHow many of the 15 social platforms we track the vendor says the tool supports.Formula: Linear: platforms / 10 x 100, capped at 100. No verified platform list = not scored.

The ranking

The order is computed from verified vendor data, and each row carries its check date. Tools with too little data are listed without a score. The full list is also on the social listening category page.

Each value links the vendor page it was read from (hover for the check date). Coverage is the share of the scorecard's weight with verified data, and "N of M criteria" how many criteria the score is based on; a tool is ranked at 60% or more.

Score is 0 to 100 on the category scorecard; coverage is the share of scorecard weight with verified data. Prices are list prices in US dollars from each vendor's pricing page; the Checked column is the newest date any fact of that tool was verified. 6 listed without a score because under 60% of the weight has verified data. Fedica is a social media dashboard that also lists monitoring and listening, so it fits a team that wants scheduling, audience analytics and some listening in one tool. It leads the table partly on price: the entry plan is $15 per month on Publish. The vendor's sign-up page lists monitoring and listening on the Research plan, which costs $129 per month, so the headline price is not the price of the listening feature.

TrendFynd describes itself as a brand monitoring and trend discovery platform, which makes it a fit for a creator or small team that wants mention alerts and content ideas from trending videos. Its entry price is low: the Starter plan is $19 per month, level with Nephia at $19 per month, and a free plan is listed as Yes.

The platform list is social, not editorial: Instagram, TikTok, X (Twitter), YouTube, Pinterest, Threads, Reddit. If your monitoring job is news coverage, check the vendor's source list before you rely on it.

Nephia is a narrow service: it checks sources such as X and Reddit for brand mentions, classifies them with AI and delivers them through Slack, webhooks and an API. It suits a developer or a small startup that wants mentions pushed into the tools it already uses, not a dashboard for a PR team.

  • Free plan: Yes; first paid plan Solo at $19 per month.
  • API: Yes; platforms listed: TikTok, X (Twitter), YouTube, Bluesky, Reddit, Mastodon.

Awario is a brand monitoring tool whose vendor description covers social networks, news, blogs, forums and the web, with boolean search and reports. That is the closest match in this list to the classic idea of media monitoring, and it also lists a clear export statement.

The Starter plan costs $49 per month ($29 per month, billed annually) for 1 user, and Pro lists 10 users at $149 per month. It has no free plan, only a trial.

Hootsuite is a social media management suite with listening as one module, alongside scheduling, a shared inbox and competitor tracking. Its listing makes sense if you already run publishing and inbox work in it.

The price is per seat: $99 per seat per month on Standard, so a team of several pays several times that. The catalogue lists 100 integrations.

Who should not pick it

  • A PR team that needs news coverage should not choose Nephia: its platform list is TikTok, X (Twitter), YouTube, Bluesky, Reddit, Mastodon, all social networks.
  • Anyone who wants a free plan with real monitoring should not pick Awario, Brand24 or BuzzSumo: their free plan is listed as No.
  • Small teams on a tight budget should not pick YouScan: its entry plan is $499 per month.
  • Teams that need to take their mention history with them should check export before buying Brand24: no export statement is verified for it, while Awario lists Mentions as CSV files; reports as PDF files.
  • Teams that only want listening should not buy Hootsuite for it: it prices per seat at $99 per seat per month.

What we did not test

We did not run any of these tools against a real brand. The data comes from vendor pricing and feature pages, so it says what a vendor publishes and what it costs, not how many news sources are indexed, how fast alerts arrive, how accurate sentiment scoring is or how good support is. Those are the things that matter most in monitoring, so use a free plan or trial to check them against your own brand name. For the full list of what we leave out, see what we leave out. If you are choosing a wider tool, see the guide to social media management tools.

– = not published by the vendor, or not verified yet.

Frequently asked questions

How much do media monitoring tools cost?

Entry prices range widely. TrendFynd starts at $19 per month on its Starter plan, Awario at $49 per month, Brand24 at $249 per month and YouScan at $499 per month. Prices were read from each vendor's pricing page on Oct 14, 2026.

Is there a free media monitoring tool?

TrendFynd lists a free plan (Yes) and so does Nephia (Yes). Brand24, Awario and BuzzSumo list no free plan, but each offers a trial: 14-day free trial for Brand24.

Can I export my mentions from a monitoring tool?

It depends on the vendor. Awario lists Mentions as CSV files; reports as PDF files, TrendFynd lists Reports; full exports on the Pro plan and YouScan lists data export options on the Unlimited plans. Several tools in the table have no verified export statement.

What is the difference between media monitoring and social listening?

Media monitoring usually means tracking mentions of a brand or topic in news, blogs and forums as well as social networks, while social listening focuses on social posts and sentiment. Many vendors sell both under one product, so read the source list on the vendor's page rather than relying on the label.

Which of the social listening tools ranks first on SaaSHunter?

Fedica has the highest score, 98 out of 100, among the 13 social listening tools with enough verified data to be ranked. Its facts were last checked Oct 14, 2026. Scores are computed from the published scorecard and change when the underlying facts change.

Which social listening tools have a free plan?

3 of the 13 ranked social listening tools list a free plan: Fedica, TrendFynd, Nephia. What the free plan allows differs, so check the limits column before choosing.

What is the lowest starting price among social listening tools?

Among the ranked social listening tools, AIMentionTracker has the lowest paid starting price at $9 per month. Tools charge per seat, per connected account or per workspace, so the units differ and the lowest sticker price is not always the lowest bill for your setup.

How are the social listening tools scored?

Each tool is scored from 0 to 100 on 7 weighted criteria taken from the same scorecard for every tool: entry price, free plan or trial, pricing transparency, verified features, api, integrations and export, cost per user (team of 3), platform coverage. Criteria without verified data are left out and the weights re-normalised; a tool with under 60% of the weight covered is listed as not ranked.
